KUALA LUMPUR – Umno will continue its political cooperation with PAS in contesting for the upcoming Melaka election, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
He said the Umno Supreme Council during a meeting last night agreed this is in line with Umno’s aim to consolidate the Muafakat Nasional pact, which was decided during its 2020 Umno General Assembly.
The decision, he said, was made during the meeting chaired by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
However, he said, PAS will be using its own party logo during the upcoming polls.
“The basis of the cooperation with PAS is guided by the principle that PAS will use its own party symbol in line with the spirit and resolutions made by the Muafakat Nasional Consultative Committee on October 19 and November 18 last year,” Ahmad said in a statement.
“This is to avoid clashes with each other, and at the same time, maintain the use of our respective party logos in the election.”
Ahmad also said the Supreme Council has appointed party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan as the party’s director for the Melaka election.
He added that the Supreme Council has also given the mandate to the party’s president, deputy president, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to finalise any decisions relating to the election in the state.
Last week, Umno man and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak applied to the high court to postpone his trip to Singapore to visit his pregnant daughter, citing the Melaka election that is scheduled for November 20.
Najib had said he had been entrusted to ensure that all operations within the party run smoothly and accordingly, following the departure of Zahid to Germany for medical treatment.
Based on court documents obtained at the high court on October 22, Najib applied to amend the date of the return of his passport from November 22 to December 6.
“I have to postpone my trip to Singapore until the Melaka election is over.
“I have changed my plans where I will depart for Singapore on November 21 and return to Malaysia on December 5 (or earlier).
“I will return my passport to the court latest by December 6 (or earlier),” he said in his affidavit of support. – The Vibes, October 29, 2021
